PROVISION OF CARE FOR UNACCOMPANIED MINORS

An unaccompanied minor means a person below 18 years old who crossed the border of Poland without legal carers (parents or other persons formally allowed to provide care). In such a case, the Border Guards receiving the application for refugee status from a minor, will immediately submit a request to a court dealing with guardianship matters to appoint a legal guardian to represent the minor in the refugee status procedure and place the minor in a foster care centre.

Under an agreement that the Office for Foreigners signed with the Capital City of Warsaw, all minors are now referred to the Children's Home No. 9 at ul. Korotyńskiego 13 in Warsaw.

The conditions of stay in the establishment are much better than those in centres for foreigners. The minors stay with their peers and they are provided with the right playing and learning environment. What is also important it is the fact that the children may integrate and learn about different cultures. The appointed supervisor looks only after young unaccompanied foreigners. Just like Polish nationals, minor foreigners staying in a children's home are subject to compulsory education and have access to vocational education.

During an interview conducted as part of the refugee status procedure, a psychologist and a translator are present and an individual chosen by a minor foreigner may also participate.
